    What to expect

    Klementinum Library & Astronomical Tower

The Klementinum is Prague’s second largest building complex after Prague Castle. It's renowned for its centuries-old Baroque Library and scientific heritage. Your guide will share insights into the site’s cultural and academic legacy as you visit its most notable halls and climb the Astronomical Tower.

    Features

    • Baroque Library Hall: Step into one of the world’s most beautiful historic libraries, built in 1722 and adorned with magnificent frescoes by Jan Hiebl celebrating science and learning. This hall houses priceless antique globes and centuries-old books, offering a timeless glimpse into knowledge preserved since the Jesuits founded their university here.

    • Meridian Hall: Discover the original scientific heart of Klementinum where precise noon measurements were taken using an intricate meridian line to mark time. This hall reflects the complex’s 18th-century contributions to astronomy and meteorology, hosting original astronomical instruments once used by Jesuit scholars who advanced Prague’s status as a center of scientific learning.

    • Astronomical Tower: Ascend the 68-meter tower completed in 1722 for panoramic views over Prague’s historic center. Crowned by an iconic statue of Atlas holding a celestial sphere, this tower was once an active observatory where pioneering astronomers and meteorologists, including the likes of Johannes Kepler’s legacy, conducted their groundbreaking observations.
