Why Watch I Wanna Be Yours
Why Watch I Wanna Be Yours
There are few modern 21st century plays that capture the passion, warmth, and ardour of a simple love story as earnestly as I Wanna Be Yours. In his debut play, Zia Ahmed draws inspiration from the time-tested theme of two people from varied cultural backgrounds falling madly in love with each other. I Wanna Be Yours was written, developed, and produced with significant support from the Channel 4 Playwrights’ Scheme.
Zia Ahmed is amongst the most accomplished poets in London today. He was a Roundhouse Poetry Slam champion and the resident poet for Cape Farewell in 2015 and 2016. Here, he used his skills to record and assess the cultural response to global climate issues. During his stint as the poet-in-residence, Zia Ahmed also rose to become a London Laureate. He was also amongst the writers commissioned for the popular Where I’m From series when he served as the playwright-in-residence for the Paines Plough Channel 4. I Wanna Be Yours employs an age-old romantic theme while still managing to remain fresh and thoroughly entertaining!
The Story
Ella and Haseeb live entirely divergent and antithetical lives. While Haseeb is a young man from London, Ella hails from Northern Yorkshire. A swig of hot chocolate, some smooth music, and a glass of wine; and before they know it, the two find themselves falling for each other. From their faith and culture to the places they live in and the music they listen to, the two could not have been more different. Yet, love has a strange way of uniting the most unlikely of individuals. Deeply moving and sprinkled with a hint of comedy, I Wanna Be Yours is set to enthral audiences at London’s Bush Theatre!
