The audio tour was good. With a group of theee it was hard dor all of us to stay on the same spot of the tour. If one of the group paused the tour audio them the other part of the group would walk away. Overall the history was amazing. One suggestion would be to watch The Birman of Alcatraz on Prime before visiting. Purchasing the tour on Headout was flawless. Once booking the tour there was great communication and follow-up. Very easy to park at 80 Francisco St parking garage and a 4 minute walk to the boat. No waiting at the ticket office just walk to the boarding queue. Off load and return trip were just as easy. Overall a great day with our 12 year old grandson.

We had a great day at Alcatraz. Upon arriving at the pier to catch the ferry, every person associated with the tour were friendly and professional. The ride to the prison was enjoyable and offered great views of the San Francisco Bay area. Once we set foot on the island we were given a short walking tour that set the tone for the rest of the day. Moving from space to space with the headphones gave a true insight of the hardships and daily grind of the prisoners life at the prison. My wife and I thought this adventure to Alcatraz was a highlight of our trip and recommend it highly.

Our Alcatraz experience was very positive. The trip was extremely organized and the staff were very helpful and knowledgeable. I'd recommend this to everyone travelling to SF.

It was alright, was swarmed with flies at the pier and on the ferry and on the "rock", if we had known then we would have been prepared to have bug sprays with us or covered up properly. Alcatraz wasn't that 100% good in history - not much to see properly. Didn't have the audio guide but they gave me a booklet as I'm deaf and they don't provide audio/bluetooth loop. They wouldn't accept my tickets first because you were the third party so had to go through a loop to get it done at the booth and show my passports to them which was not happy with.

What to bring

A valid government-issued photo ID.

A jacket or warm layer — the island can be cool and windy, especially at night.

Comfortable walking shoes, as the route includes a steep uphill climb equivalent to about 13 stories.

What’s not allowed

Large bags, suitcases, or oversized luggage are not permitted on the ferry or island.

Pets are not allowed, except registered service animals.

Intoxicants, illegal substances, and similar banned items are strictly prohibited.

Smoking and vaping are allowed only in designated areas near the dock.

Drones or remote-controlled devices are not permitted anywhere on the island.

Accessibility

The island is wheelchair accessible, with accessible restrooms and a tram available for visitors with limited mobility.

Staff can assist guests with special accessibility needs.

Wheelchairs are not available for rent at either Pier 33 or Alcatraz Island.

Additional information

Arrive at Pier 33 at least 60 minutes before your scheduled ferry departure.

Allow about 15 minutes for the return ferry to Pier 33 after leaving Alcatraz Island.

Visitors may stay on Alcatraz Island for as long as they wish within operating hours (see schedule for day and night tours).

Children aged 4 and under can enter free of charge.

Tours run rain or shine — dress for the weather.

Meals and beverages are not provided; on-island options are minimal.

Guided commentary is not included — tours are self-guided via an audio guide app.

Certain exhibits and activities are exclusive to the night tour; check your ticket for details.
