Stepping along the ancient walls of the Moorish Castle is like touching history itself. The sweeping views of Sintra, the Atlantic, and the surrounding forests are truly awe-inspiring. We visited in the first week of October, when the crowds had thinned and the air was cooler, the perfect setting for slow exploration and quiet reflection. It’s a climb that rewards not only with vistas but with a sense of perspective, a reminder of time’s passage and human resilience. Bring good shoes, a bit of water, and time to simply stand, breathe, and take in the beauty that stretches endlessly in every direction.

Glad that I arrived when I did because as I was returning back from my exploration, the gates were closed for those that wanted to enter just before 6pm. So go earlier! No later than 5. The views were spectacular, and the hike up the stairs was a workout but worth every step. This place is old! Very cool.

Zeker de moeite waard! Als je te voet gaat, richting beide plekken zoals ik heb gedaan, wees er dan op bedacht dat je de volgende dag spierpijn hebt 😉 Bij het Moors kasteel is het veel klemmen, veel trap lopen, maar geloof mij, het is meer dan de moeite waard! Het is prachtig! Bij Quinta da Regaleira is het veel lopen omdat het groot is, ook heuvelachtig, dus zeker niet alleen maar vlak. De "waterput" waar je als herboren uit zou komen... Ik had er veel van verwacht in die zin dat je even rustig naar beneden kon lopen.. Echter "moet" je doorlopende, want als je te lang stil blijft staan om even te kijken of goede foto's te maken, wordt er door iemand geroepen dat je door moet lopen... Dat is wel jammer. Echter is het er wel mooi!

I would suggest heading up the scenic mountain path from Sintra to really appreciate the splender of this Moorish castle, first glimpsed from below and then, when at the top, fully immersed in all its glory.

Amazing history. Great view from the top of the Moorish Castle. Pena Palace crowd control worked well, and the bus to the top was a welcome teat after climbing to the top of the Moorish Castle.
