Karnak is an extraordinary complex of sanctuaries, kiosks, pylons, and obelisks dedicated to the Theban triad of gods and the glory of Egypt's pharaohs. Sprawling over more than 2 sq km – large enough to contain about 10 cathedrals – this massive religious site was built, added to, dismantled, restored, and decorated over nearly 1500 years. At its heart lies the Temple of Amun-Ra, one of the world's largest religious complexes, dominated by the spectacular Hypostyle Hall with its forest of 134 gigantic papyrus-shaped columns, some towering 21m high. The further you venture into the complex, the older the structures become, revealing layers of ancient Egypt's architectural evolution.

Don't miss the Open-Air Museum, home to the remarkable White Chapel of Senusret I and Red Chapel of Hatshepsut, or the well-preserved Temple of Ramses III, a miniature version of his temple at Medinat Habu. Other highlights include the Khonsu Temple, the avenue of ram-headed sphinxes, and walls intricately carved with hieroglyphics depicting religious and political life. Visit in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is most beautiful and the crowds are thinner. Allow 2-3 hours to explore, bring water, a hat, and sunscreen as the area is largely exposed to the elements, and consider making multiple visits to fully appreciate this overwhelming jumble of ancient remains
