Renowned as the first true Gothic monument, the basilica is celebrated for its soaring architecture, stained glass, and its role as the royal burial site of French monarchs.

What to bring

Carry a valid ID if you’re eligible for free admission under age or residency criteria.

Dress warmly from October to April, as the basilica interior can feel cold.

What’s not allowed

Large luggage isn’t permitted inside the basilica.

Only guide dogs for visually impaired visitors are allowed; all other pets are restricted.

Accessibility

There are nine steps to reach the royal necropolis, 15 steps to the crypt, and 15 steps to the upper choir.

Additional information

Admission is free on European Heritage Days (third weekend of September) and on the first Sunday of each month from November to March.

Free entry applies to visitors under 18, EU residents aged 18–25, disabled guests with companions, jobseekers with recent certification, education pass holders, and architecture students.

The basilica occasionally limits access for funerals or special masses, as it remains an active church.

A multilingual leaflet is provided in 12 languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Japanese, Chinese, Russian, Polish, Czech, and Dutch.
