Why You Should Watch Welcome to Iran
Why You Should Watch Welcome to Iran
Nadia Fall is amongst the most popular upcoming directors in British Theatre. She directed the play Disgraced in 2013 and won the coveted Pulitzer Prize for Drama. She was also the associate director of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, which won the Olivier Award. Formerly the Associate Director of the National Theatre, she is now the Artistic Director of Royal Stradford East. Welcome to Iran is a gripping show that is born from Nadia’s travels and experiences. It showcases the country in a gentle but succinct manner, giving the audience a flavour of modern-day Iran and shattering stereotypes like never before.
The Story
The story revolves around Ava, an ordinary Londoner in her twenties. She journeys to Iran after the passing of her estranged father, hoping to gain some insight into her past and her family. Amidst all the lush art and the rich culture, she finds herself sucked into a world of raids, rave parties, and impermissible love. All of this comes crashing into her as she tries to maneuver through Tehran traffic, family politics, and moral policing. The show pulls out all the stops and presents a brutally honest picture of Iran that most other directors would be unlikely to portray.
