Took my teens to Derinkuyu after reading about underground cities, and honestly, totally worth it. The tunnels go waaay deeper than I expected, and there’s this odd echo when you talk. My daughter kept ducking because the ceilings are SO LOW in places. Can’t imagine living like that, but the engineering is wild—like, there are spots for wine, animals, everything. We skipped the guide and kinda regretted it, since there’s not much signage. Still, felt cool exploring on our own. Crowds picked up around 11am, so go early if you don’t wanna shuffle behind groups.

Derinkuyu blew my mind. We visited with a guide who explained how people used to hide here for months—whole families, animals, food, everything. There are these massive stone doors for defense and little holes in the walls for passing food (or so the guide said). I’m 6’1 and kept banging my head, so watch out. The stairs are steep and super narrow. Not ideal for anyone with mobility probs. But the whole thing is just EPIC.

Went solo, and was a bit nervous about the tight spaces but made it! The tunnels are narrow AF, sometimes had to walk sideways lol. It’s chilly down there too, so bring a sweater even if it’s hot outside. A bit of a workout getting out, so not for everyone. The place gets busy, especially with tour groups, but the vibe is unique. Would be nice if there were more info panels though.

We went as part of a group tour and honestly, the guide made it 10x better. He pointed out tiny details we’d have missed, like how the air shafts work (soooo clever) and where the stables were. My son kept pretending he was in Indiana Jones, haha. It got crowded at one point but cleared up after noon. Bring water—gets stuffy.

Family trip, kids loved it way more than I thought they would. They played hide and seek in the bigger rooms (maybe not allowed, oops). The passages are super narrow in places, so no big backpacks. Not stroller friendly at all! Staff at the entrance were friendly and pointed us to a good guide.
