Starting in the heart of the city, Piazza del Campo, you will discover the tradition of the famous Palio, a horse race that takes place twice a year since the Middle Ages. Your guide will regale stories about the mysterious "bottini", an underground medieval aqueduct excavated in the sandstone of the Fonte Gaia (fountain).
As you tour the ancient street Banchi di Sopra, you'll learn about some of the most important Sienese families. These families have majestic palaces like Palazzo Tolomei, one of the oldest private buildings in Siena, and Palazzo Salimbeni, the oldest public bank of Europe. Take in the grandeur of Basilica of San Domenico and the Bapitry nearing the end of your tour. You'll hear stories about the religious importance of these sites.
