Why You Should Watch Stray Dogs
Why You Should Watch Stray Dogs
Stray Dogs is based on true events and showcases the journey of one of the most incredible women who shaped the 20th century. It is a beautiful exploration of themes like despotism and oppression, studying how it thoroughly destabilizes the political scenario across various time periods. Set in Russia, in 1940, this compelling and pertinent play depicts how poetry and language were the only weapons against fear and tyranny. The show has its world premiere at London’s West End.
The Story
With her husband lost to the clutches of the government and her son counting his days until execution in state prison, there is probably no one who hates the government more than Anna Akhmatova. Anna, who is one of the most famous poets of her time, is approached by Stalin, the man responsible for all the loss in her life. She is asked to do him a favour.
Anna’s life is thrown into a spiral and she is cast into darkness. For the longest time, she is believed to be no more. However, she is given a chance to renew her life when Isaiah Berlin, the Russian/British philosopher risks a life of imprisonment to seek her out. When poetry is like a wildfire that can rouse the masses for good or evil, towards which side will her loyalty tip her? What is she willing to do to save a life? How far will she go to save herself?
