why watch life of pi
Lolita Chakrabarti’s five-star adaptation of Life of Pi is all set to woo audiences at Wyndham's Theatre in 2020. Based on the award-winning bestseller of the same name by Yann Martel, the story follows a tragic shipwreck that finds a 16-year-old boy stranded on a lifeboat with a ferocious tiger for company. The story was also adapted into a film in 2012. Directed by Ang Lee, the film grossed over $600 million at the box office and won several Academy Awards.
The creative team behind the play includes the artistic direction of Max Webster, with life-size puppets designed to represent the tiger by Nick Barnes and Finn Caldwell. To create a more surreal environment, the theatre will reconfigure its space to provide for an intimate experience, featuring a special extended stage so that the floor and walls become one. Life of Pi is an epic drama of survival that will take you on a journey of endurance and hope.
The Story
After a cargo ship sinks to the bottom of the Pacific ocean, what remains is a single lifeboat with five survivors - a hyena, a zebra, an orangutan, a 16-year-old boy, and a 450-pound Royal Bengal tiger. What then follows is a fantastical tale about survival. Stranded alone in the middle of nowhere at sea with a wild tiger named Richard Parker, Pi must endure a long seafaring journey through cleverness, prayer, and willpower.
