Pantheon
Opposed to the other majestic Parisian buildings, the Pantheon is a neoclassical architecture built by taking inspiration from the Pantheon of Rome. It started as a functional church and then later turned into a mausoleum. Here in the crypt, you will find the resting places of some of the world’s most popular writers and philosophers. The structure has seen major changes over the years and played its part in the French Revolution. You can find the tombs of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire. Here you can also find sections of paintings dedicated to Clovis, the first converted Christian king, Charlemagne, Louis IX of France, Louis XVIII, Louis XVI, and Marie-Antoinette, etc.
Guided Tour of Notre Dame, Sainte-Chapelle & La Conciergerie
Begin your journey by admiring the Notre Dame Cathedral from the outside. The medieval Catholic cathedral was built in the Gothic style at the end of the Île de la Cité on the ruins of two other churches. Learn about the history and transformations through the years. It sets all-new standards for all French architectural marvels in terms of size, architectural magnificence, and historical significance. The structure hosts a variety of statues, gargoyles, and chimeras which together create an intricately detailed site to behold.
Sainte-Chapelle on the other hand is one of the most significant parts of French history. It was commissioned by King Louis IX. Today it houses the Crown of Thorns which was placed on Christ’s head during the crucifixion. You can witness other relics of Passion along with other religious and historically significant artifacts. The stained glass windows here are a mind-blowing art piece with such intricate details on display that it just might bring tears to your eyes.
Proceed to La Conciergerie, located on the banks of the Seine. Originally a part of the royal palace, it was turned into a prison during the “Reign of Terror”. You can see the private cell of the last Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, where she spent her last days before her execution.
End your experience with a 1-hour Seine river cruise. Unwind from the day as you listen to the onboard guide and admire the city from a different, advantageous perspective.
