The Wolves

Based on Sarah DeLappe’s finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, The Wolves is the tale of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals while navigating the whims of their adolescent lives.

    Why Watch The Wolves

The Wolves is a sweet, satisfying tale that focuses on the experiences of high school girls during their daily afternoon soccer warm ups. Tackling issues and topics most people would rather not discuss upfront, the show is an accurate depiction of what goes on in the head of a teenage girl. Sarah DeLappe’s fascinating story is captured masterfully on stage by director Lila Neugebauer and a winning young cast.

    The Story

A suburban, idyllic setting. 9 girls who are all part of the school’s soccer team. Intense discussions on everything from sanitary pads, menstrual cycles and the coach’s hangover, to school buses of years past, Harry Potter, the opposing team’s jerseys and Vietnam. From the safety of their literal suburban stretch circle, the team ponders big questions and partakes in tiny battles with all the wit and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors..

    Critics Reviews

“Girl power is atomic in “The Wolves,” the incandescent portrait of an indoor soccer team that blasted open on Sunday night at the Duke on 42nd Street. The scary, exhilarating brightness of raw adolescence emanates from every scene of this uncannily assured first play by Sarah DeLappe, and at times your instinct is to shade your eyes.”

    – The New York Times

“As directed with naturalistic virtuosity by Lila Neugebauer, these random adolescent howls makes the girls all of one pack, yet also specifically themselves. In addition, it captures the don’t-take-anything-for-granted approach by Delappe, who creates a heightened sense of audience attentiveness in order to find in these young women glimpses of pain, hope and sorrow in the smallest of gestures and the slightest of words.”

Go watch The Wolves if you're up for an unusual evening of theatre, with lots of overlapping dialogue (and some ambiguity at first). Love the cast! They do a splendid job of teamwork, something that you don't get to see so often. The play is indeed impeccably crafted. Don't miss it!

Love how female friendships are depicted in The Wolves! Too real! The unconventional story line talks about the lives of a team of soccer playing girls who are stepping into adulthood. While it did seem cliched at first, it turned out to be a great surprise. Loved it!

While the play was brilliantly scripted, I found it rather overrated. Maybe I read up too many articles about The Wolves, and ended up creating a hype for it. But I was disappointed to see how it turned out. I had so many questions by the end of it, and was frustrated seeing the ended it on such an ambiguous note.

Smart, profound, funny and thought provoking -- only a few of the many words I can use to describe The Wolves. Don't be surprised if it makes you tear up in public. The cast does a wonderful job and depicts the struggles so beautifully, it is almost hard to believe they're acting.

An exciting ensembling play. The Wolves takes you into the life of a teenager and before you know it - you're hooked! However if unconventional theatre is not your cup of tea, you may end up feeling disappointed.
