This reimagination of the 1981 Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical is sure to be a treat for those who are fans of the original! Although the play was initially a flop when it premiered over 30 years ago, this new production, helmed by Noah Brody, is produced by the same people behind the Off-Broadway hit, Into the Woods. With a stellar cast and excellent production value, Merrily We Roll Along is sure to hold its own as an original production, and not as one that holds a candle to the original. .
The Story
A musical whose story is told backwards, Merrily We Roll Along is about Broadway composer turned Hollywood producer, Franklin Shepard. We learn that Shephard became successful with the help of his best friends Charley, who writes the books and lyrics, and Mary, the support system and writer in her own right. Inspired by the Russian satellite Sputnik, the three friends decide to make it big in the world of American musical theater and book writing, through which they can “change the world”. As the play progresses, however, Franklin realises that fortune and fame both come at a price, and he has, in the process of reaching high, alienated his closest friends and family, including Charley and Mary. Will he ever find a way out of his loneliness and reunite with them? Watch the show to find out.

Its original production, which closed just two weeks after opening, was the subject of a 2016 documentary, “Best Worst Thing That Ever Could Have Happened.”
