Pantheon
As an interesting contrast to Paris's panorama of buildings, the Pantheon has a neoclassical facade designed by Jacques-Germain Soufflot. Originally a church, the monument now serves as a mausoleum. With your skip-the-line tickets, expect a smooth entry that will set the tone for your visit. Collect your visitor's guide in 1 of 9 languages.
The Pantheon houses a stunning art collection that evokes vivid imagery of French nationalism and the French Revolution, with painted frescos, mosaics, and paintings depicting the life of Saint Geneviève. Spend an hour exploring this Gothic structure. Then, descend on a narrow spiral staircase to the crypts that house the remains of famous French and Parisian figures such as Victor Hugo (The Hunchback of Notre Dame), Voltaire, Alexandre Dumas, and others.
Climb to the impressive dome of the Pantheon for breathtaking views of Paris. The installation of Foucault's Pendulum, which demonstrated that the Earth did indeed revolve around its axis, marked the final transformation of the Pantheon from a church to a secular temple—a perfect balance of religion and science.
Sainte Chapelle
Discover this historic Gothic architectural gem at your own pace. Guided by a series of information panels, relive the history of Sainte Chapelle, commissioned by King Louis IX in 1241. Sainte Chapelle housed relics from the Passion of the Christ acquired by the monarch in the 13th century. These include a piece of the True Cross and the Holy Crown (nearly lost in the early 19th century). In 1790, Sainte Chapelle was restricted to clergy only. It gradually became archive storage for the neighboring Palais de Justice, also known as Paris's Court House, until a restoration campaign got launched in response to public pressure. The relics were either lost or displaced during the French Revolution. However, the chapel has breathtakingly beautiful stained-glass windows. With 15 50-square-foot windows, you can see the history of the world up until the arrival of the relics in Paris. The stained glass depicts 1,113 scenes in total.
