Why You Should Watch Anna Bolena
The show is filled with wholehearted melodies, passionate singing, and nimble coloratura, making every second of Anna Bolena an expert-lesson in bel canto opera. The entire show demands a completely involved soprano who can embody the complex life of Anna Bolena, and Ermonela Jaho plays the part with elegance and mastery.
She has been called ‘a fiery angel’ by The Economist and is well-known for her immersive embodiment of characters on stage. A talented soprano, she has always been known to give her heart and soul to the audience, resulting in some of the most fabulous shows that captivate and mesmerize the audience.
The production has a stellar cast that includes Teddy Tahu Rhodes as the merciless king, and Ho-Yoon Chung as Lord Percy. This production, the first of an all-new trilogy of Donizetti’s operas on the Tudor Queen, is brought to you by the same creative team that was responsible for the stunning show, Aida. Directed by the talented Davide Livermore, this production showcases breathtaking costumes and custom sets that are laced with high-end technology.
The Story
This opera by Donizetti extracts the best chucks from a gruesome time in history, fabricating a gripping ride through the final days of Anne Boleyn’s wedlock with King Henry VIII. Surrounded by envious courtiers and cunning royals, the queen is entangled in a gradually-contracting trap. Her lady-in-waiting is awaiting her demise, ready to take the throne when Anne falls.
Henry VIII has lost interest in his second wife, Anne Boleyn, and is having a secret-affair with Jane Seymour, her lady-in-waiting. The king is scheming to overthrow his wife from the throne and puts her in a pickle when he invites the queen’s former lover to the court. In a brutal and treacherous world, can the innocence of the Tudor Queen supersede the King’s resolve to do away with her?
