About Ronacher Theater

Dating back to 1872, the Ronacher Theater is one of the oldest English-language theaters in Europe and continues to captivate audiences even today. The theater offers diverse performances, from variety shows, comedic acts, operettas, revues, and musicals. The auditorium retains most of its original facade, adorned with intricate details of the yesteryears. Originally known as Establissement Ronacher, the theater is now a part of the Vereinigte Buhnen Wien, a prestigious theater group in Vienna.

Why visit Ronacher Theater?

Did you know?
  • Theatersaal Ronacher: The Ronacher Theater had humble beginnings. Since its inception in 1872, the theater has functioned as a circus and a beer hall to hosting exclusively variety shows on stage. In 1887, the Ronacher assumed the moniker of ‘Theatersaal Ronacher’ and began showcasing operettas, comedic acts, and revues. It is only recently that the theater is focusing exclusively on musicals.
  • World War II effects: Like other theaters in Vienna, the Ronacher Theater also suffered consequential damage during World War II bombings. Around 1945, the bombings led by the Allied Forces caused significant tears to its interiors and exterior facade. However, after extensive renovation efforts, the Ronacher was opened to the public in 1955.
  • Hidden passageways: It is expected that an old establishment like the Ronacher Theater would have a series of hidden pathways and rooms inside, which are unexplored and not in use today. One can assume that these rooms were used during stage rehearsals or to house artists. Some art enthusiasts have also pointed out that the continuous renovations have revealed Art Nouveau elements of the castle.
  • A world-class performance: In 1992, the Ronacher Theater hosted a spectacular musical on the Empress Sisi of Austria titled ‘Elisabeth’. The musical was a major hit, attracting audiences from all over the globe. ‘Elisabeth’ ran for several weeks, solidifying Ronacher’as status as one of the premium theater venues in Europe. The production was composed by Sylvester Levay and Michael Kunze.
  • Digital changes: While the Ronacher Theater is situated in the historic Theater District of Vienna and is known for its old-world charm and Neo-Baroque architecture, they have embraced technological innovations in recent times to offer the best for its audience. The theater is also posting behind-the-scenes content on social media to interact with young theater enthusiasts.
