Visit one of Lisbon’s most significant landmarks – the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Belém, more commonly known as, Jerónimos Monastery.

Highlights

  • Discover this masterpiece of Portuguese architecture, Jerónimos Monastery, with its detailed structural cloisters, corridors, vaulted ceilings, and decorative entrance.

  • Take a stroll through the garden and admire the fountain, decorated with Portuguese coats of arms.

  • Create a hassle-free itinerary with a Lisbon Card which will give you access to sites like the Belém Tower, the National Costume Museum, the National Museum of the Azulejo, and more, with free transportation.

The Monastery of Jeronimos is amazing, not to be missed when visiting Lisbon. Unfortunately the church was closed at the time of our visit (Saturday) which was disappointing. It only opened for an hour that day and it would have been good to know when we booked the ticket.

The attraction was marvellous. The booking system not so ! i bought online tickets expecting i could get entry in a faster line. I had to wait for 1 1/2 hours in a queue with people who bought their tickets on the day. Please set up a system for appointed times of entry to speed up the access to this wonderful building.

I'd imagined that buying a ticket in advance would avoid having to wait too long to enter the site. It didn't. Knowing this helps you prepare psychologically. I had to download the ticket and I didn't have wifi on site. So it was complicated for me. It's not at the ticket office that you have to wait. It's to get inside the site. However, it's a great opportunity to buy your ticket in advance.

The online ticket sale was fine. Signs at the Jerónimos Monastery were confusing: With the online ticket join the western side que and not the one into the church, where a ticket is not required. Both the monastery and church were well worth the visit.

These tickets are valid until 30 Jun, 2024.

A Portuguese national monument since 1907 and a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1983, the Jerónimos Monastery is one of the highest symbols of medieval Portuguese architecture. Historically and artistically connected to the Belém Tower, both these notable landmarks of Lisbon were built on the initiative of King Manuel I, who ruled between 1495 and 1521. The Belém Tower was built not only to protect the port of Lisbon but also for the Jerónimos Monastery.

Soak up the different elements that make up this stunning model of Manueline architectural style including Gothic, Moorish, and Renaissance styles. The two levels of cloisters are so intricate and filled with structural detail that they took a hundred years to be completed! Spot mythical creatures like gargoyles and marine animals within the carvings, columns, and arches. Don’t miss the vaulted ceilings on the lower level of the monastery or the views from the higher level of the adjacent Church of Santa Maria de Belém.
