The small group with an excellent guide, Martin Duarte, was perfect for me. I wear hearing aids so cannot use the ear buds. Being able to walk next to our guide allowed me to hear all he said.

Skip the line definitely if you plan to go later on the day. We were the first group in at opening, the line for tickets already started. By the time we came out, the line was at least 1 kilometre long. Only draw back is limited time allowed once inside the monastery. It was a bit rush.

Ricky was a brilliant tour guide, having a clear passion for history and storytelling! Something we discovered not every tour guide has! I recommend Ricky to add context and texture to you Lisbon visit!

Admire the architecture of the monastery

Learn about the historical tales of the monastery from your guide and admire its Manueline architecture. Designed by Diogo de Boitaca, the monument represents the era of the Renaissance. Inside the monastery, take in elaborate sculptural details and maritime motifs embedded on its walls. Take a stroll through the cloister and admire the double arches, the pointed swirls, and the psychedelic ceilings.

Explore the adjoining rooms and beyond

Visit the adjoining rooms and peek at a library that is centuries old. Explore a room that is devoted to the history of the monument. As you continue to walk with your guide, you’ll come across an intricately designed doorway that leads to Chapter House, the place that harbors the tomb of Alexandro Herculano, a famous Portuguese historian. Then, stop by the former monks' refectory, a space that contains beautiful 18th-century azulejos tiles portraying the Biblical story of Joseph. Finally, visit the ground to enjoy spectacular views over the River Tagus.

Walking tour of Belém neighborhood

With a ticket upgrade take a delightful walking tour of the Belém neighborhood. Led by an expert guide, understand the area’s rich history, its significance during the 15th and 16th centuries, and the Age of Exploration. Make sure to bring some extra cash for a stop at Pastéis de Belém, where you can indulge in the world-famous custard tarts, served fresh at a shop over 100 years old. Pass by the impressive Monument to the Discoveries, a striking tribute to Portugal's legendary explorers, adorned with statues that inspire the spirit of adventure. While you won't go inside, many travelers often choose to explore this landmark after the tour.
