Admire the architecture of the monastery
Learn about the historical tales of the monastery from your guide and admire its Manueline architecture. Designed by Diogo de Boitaca, the monument represents the era of the Renaissance. Inside the monastery, take in elaborate sculptural details and maritime motifs embedded on its walls. Take a stroll through the cloister and admire the double arches, the pointed swirls, and the psychedelic ceilings.
Explore the adjoining rooms and beyond
Visit the adjoining rooms and peek at a library that is centuries old. Explore a room that is devoted to the history of the monument. As you continue to walk with your guide, you’ll come across an intricately designed doorway that leads to Chapter House, the place that harbors the tomb of Alexandro Herculano, a famous Portuguese historian. Then, stop by the former monks' refectory, a space that contains beautiful 18th-century azulejos tiles portraying the Biblical story of Joseph. Finally, visit the ground to enjoy spectacular views over the River Tagus.
