Ta-Set-Neferu, also known as the Valley of the Queens, should be at the top of your Luxor to-do list despite occasionally being overshadowed by the Valley of the Kings. As the saying goes, every great man is supported by an even stronger woman, and the Valley of the Queens is the ideal example of a tribute to a powerful lady in ancient Egypt. The tombs of the mighty Pharaohs' wives and sons, whose graves were created expressly for them, are remarkable.
What to Expect on the Guided Tour
Start your trip off properly by being picked up from your hotel in a comfortable, air-conditioned luxury vehicle. The tour starts with a visit to the Temple of Karnak, a large pillared edifice holding numerous religious items from ancient Egypt. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at a local restaurant before getting on a traditional boat for the Nile crossing to the City of the Dead (available at extra cost).
Hidden in a Y-shaped valley on the West Bank of the Nile is the ancient burial site known as the Valley of the Queens, where the Pharaohs' wives were laid to rest throughout the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties. Despite the extensive renovation, the tomb of Nefertari, largely considered the greatest in all of Egypt, is seldom open to visitors.
Your guide will lead you into the elaborate colonnaded interior of the Temple of Hatshepsut, dedicated to one of Egypt's most famous kings. You will also visit the Colossi of Memnon, the two Egyptian seated statues from the 18th dynasty that date back 3,400 years. After a full day of touring, relax on the trip back to your hotel.
