It was the park before the exhibit, the exhibit itself and the art. A very impressive collection, with works not that familiar to the art lovers, even though created by very well known artists. Overall, great experience!

A journey through millennia of art

Begin at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum, where each gallery reveals a new chapter in art history. Start with ancient Egyptian artifacts and Greek sculptures before moving through rooms of glittering Islamic art and rare Armenian manuscripts. The European galleries showcase masterpieces like Rembrandt's paintings and complete sets of 18th-century French furniture. Don't miss the dedicated Lalique room, where hundreds of Art Nouveau jewels and glass pieces demonstrate why René Lalique was Gulbenkian's favorite artist.

Modern art meets contemporary architecture

Cross the garden to enter the transformed Centro de Arte Moderna (CAM), where Kengo Kuma's renovation has created a dialogue between art and nature. The main Nave gallery stretches before you, while a sculptural staircase leads to underground exhibition spaces illuminated by garden-view windows. Here, discover Portugal's largest collection of modern art, including powerful works by Paula Rego and the country's most comprehensive collection of Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso paintings. The gallery flows naturally toward the 100-meter engawa terrace, where Portuguese ceramic tiles create a rhythmic canopy perfect for contemplation.

Gardens as the living gallery

Weave your time between museums with stops in the modernist garden, designed as an extension of the art experience. Follow winding paths past century-old trees and reflecting pools that mirror the changing sky. The garden's careful design by António Viana Barreto and Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles creates outdoor rooms and hidden corners, each offering a new perspective on the museum buildings. Use your audio guide to learn about the architectural vision that united art, nature, and Portuguese modernism in this unique cultural complex.
