Why Watch Caroline, or Change
Caroline, or change is a gripping tale of the struggles that a person of colour faces in a dominantly white neighbourhood, especially when they are working as domestic helpers. Amidst this is another narrative, that of young Noah, the son of the family she works for. Sharon D. Clark performs exceptionally as Caroline and manages to evoke every emotion with textbook precision. Tony Kushner’s Olivier Award-winning is directed artfully by Michael Longhurst and features compositions from Tony Award-winning composer Jeanine Tesori.
This West End show at the Playhouse Theatre is one of those plays that can enthral and captivate audiences while also moving them to explore some of the most shameful moments in human history. The cast does an absolutely flawless job and Olivier Award-winning actress Sharon D. Clarke put up a majestic performance with emphatic vocals and acting.
Black people in white neighbourhoods are forced to shuffle between dealing with their own issues and handling the racial pressures they face on a daily basis. Caroline is a maid for the Gellman’s, a rich Jewish family, who ensure that she works in isolation in the basement. The story also follows the narratives of the recently married wife of Stuart Gellman, Mrs. Rose Stepnick Gellman, and Stuart’s son Noah Gellman. The musical is a complex oddity, one that combines the melody of soul-stirring songs with a story that touches the intricate details of life in the 60s.
“Sharon D Clarke has long had one of theatre’s most resonant, authoritative voices. But here she astonishes, with a riveting portrait of a woman whose rock-hard stoicism is etched with pain.”
