Pinter 6: Party Time/Celebration

From the mind of Harold Pinter, the genius behind Betrayal and The Lover, comes a double-bill show of Party Time and Celebration, only at the Harold Pinter Theatre this season.

Why Watch Pinter 6: Party Time/Celebration

‘Tis the season for Pinter at the Pinter! This double-bill features Party Time and Celebration, with a stellar cast that includes Celia Imrie, Ron Cook and Gary Kemp, among others. Directed by Jamie Lloyd, both plays feature characteristic Pinteresque dialogue and subtle, ambiguous characterisation.

The Story

Party Time is a scathing look at how the bourgeois, style-conscious and narcissistic London society is cut off from the squalor and poverty outside. Gavin, a suave power-broker is throwing a party, where idle small talk mostly revolves around idyllic island retreats, exclusive health clubs and past romantic liaisons. The external world everybody at the party’s ignoring makes its way into the party in a violent way in the form of one of the guests, leading to a fascinating conflict of human behavior that makes for excellent theatre.

Celebration tells the story of two brothers, Lambert and Matt, and two sisters, Prue and Julie, each of whom are married to the other. They are all gathered at a restaurant to celebrate Lambert and Julie’s wedding anniversary. What begins as a seemingly ordinary dinner turns into a complex story with more sinister themes, including incest and subliminal love-hate relationships, making for a great viewing of the human condition on the stage.
