A Christmas Carol At The Merchant's House

Relish this beautifully atmospheric revival of Dickens’ mid-19th century novella and screen perennial, A Christmas Carol. Take a trip back into the Victorian era and bask in John Kevin Jones’ captivating take on this classic.

    Why Watch A Christmas Carol

It is rare that you get the opportunity to accompany Mr. Dickens, portrayed by John Kevin Jones, as you sit in the intimate parlor of the famous Merchant’s House Museum for a one-hour performance inspired by Dickens’ original script. You will get to toast the holiday season with wine, cider and holiday cookies before selected performances, giving you the complete 19th-century experience!

The story itself is as fresh as it was 150 years ago, when it was first written. Co-adapted by Rhonda Dodd, Jones’ raspy tone and gaunt expressions perfectly complement the immersive atmosphere in the Merchant’s House. The various characters in the story are summoned with emphatic storytelling accompanied by apt variations in tone and body language. This is a unique experience that is sure to add a fresh hue to this Christmas season.

    The Story

Ebenezer Scrooge is as cold and miserly a man as can be. He sees Christmas dinner invitations and merry-making as a complete waste of time. As a man who believes that the poor deserve their fate, charity workers irritate him to no end. Jacob Marley, Scrooge’s former business partner, has been dead for over seven years, and he is now bound to the world in the form of a ghost as punishment for being consumed by the desire for more riches.

Marley’s spirit visits Scrooge and warns him of the fate that awaits if he fails to change his outlook and continues to treat his workers harshly. Over the course of the next three nights, the Three Spirits of Christmas help Scrooge morph into a better human being.

Experience this incredible story of self-realisation and transformation in all its glory at this brilliant performance.
