Relish this new age tale by the famed Mark Ravenhill who has outdone himself once again. An emotional and sometimes sharply provocative story, ‘The Cane’ is undoubtedly one of West End’s best shows this season!
Why Watch The Cane
In a world where fear drives our actions on many occasions, The Cane dares to explore some of society’s most dreaded questions. The complex characteristics of Edward are brilliantly portrayed by the legendary Alun Armstrong. His performance is matched by the talented Nicola Walker as Anna, the daughter who is riddled with doubts of her own. In this story Mark Ravenhill manages to ask some of the more uncomfortable societal questions to which we have failed to find convincing answers.
Edward is a revered teacher and has been looking forward to his retirement after 45 brilliant years of service. Instead of being greeted with cheers, his family is instead met with jeers from students who riot outside his home. There lurks a mystery that surrounds his retirement. Why would they attack a very popular teacher and confront him with violence rather than celebrate his dedication and service? This play is sure to induce a host of questions and internal dialogue for audiences of all ages and force them to seek answers to the real-life analogues of the issues presented in the play. Watching the mystery unravel is sure to be enjoyable to the very last minute.
