Enjoy this unique tale of love and self-discovery brought to life expertly by award-winning actress Patsy Ferran and Matthew Needham. A show that received critical acclaim for being an excellent watch all-round, Summer and Smoke is the perfect way to spend an evening this winter!

Why Watch Summer and Smoke

An excellent play about a young man and woman who undergo a deep philosophical change, Summer and Smoke is rarely sighted on stage when compared to some of Williams’ other provocative works like Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and Glass Menagerie. The renowned star, Patsy Ferran along with the complete cast of the Almeida run, which had sold-out, are returning for this Tennessee Williams revival. The beautiful lighting and sound design by Lee Curran and Carolyn Downing blend seamlessly with the mood and heighten the impact of the story. There are few plays that can evoke a lush degree of raw passion and tension like Summer and Smoke does.

The Story

Summer and Smoke is set in Mississippi and focuses on Alma Winemiller. She is the temperamental, unmarried daughter of a minister. The show revolves around the sexual and spiritual romance that almost blossoms between Dr. John Buchanan, an uncouth and wild individual, and Alma. Alma is a completely refined young lady who identifies deeply with the Gothic cathedral. Buchanan, on the other hand, is a sensualist and defies her with his advances. Watch how the two go through deep spiritual change as they inevitably find their roles reversed in this captivating play.
