The Waverly Gallery

5.0

Immerse yourself in the exquisite performance of Kenneth Lonergan’s ‘The Waverly Gallery’ — finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama 2001 for its first Off-Broadway production at the Promenade Theater. The play manages to expertly portray the strength of the human spirit in the face of a ghastly disease like Alzheimer’s.

Why Watch The Waverly Gallery

Lila Neugebauer, an Obie Award Winner, manages to bring out every heartrending detail enshrined in Kenneth Lonergan’s classic play, The Waverly Gallery. There are few stories that portray the power of the human will as beautifully as this one. The play was first premiered at the Williamstown Theatre Festival in 1999 before it hit the Promenade Theater Off-Broadway, where it was critically acclaimed and well received by audiences. Talented Academy Award nominees Elaine May and Lucas Hedges star in the leading roles of The Waverly Gallery. The legendary May takes on the challenging role of Gladys while Hedges plays the role of her grandson. They will be joined by Michael Cera, Joan Allen, and David Cromer at the John Golden Theatre this September. The show is hilarious, tragic, and exciting at the same time.

The Story

Gladys Green is a feisty social activist in her 80s who owns an art gallery in Greenwich Village. She is chatty, big-hearted, and spirited. The small art gallery that she owns does not generate much revenue, but Gladys is determined to battle her Alzheimer’s by herself. Her landlord, however, wishes to close the gallery and set up a more profitable restaurant in its place. Gladys fights her disease and struggles to remain independent at the same time. She simply cannot allow her art gallery to be replaced by a restaurant. The story follows her declining health and how her daughter, son-in-law, and especially her grandson Daniel, deal with it. The Waverly Gallery expertly tells the tale of Gladys Green’s endeavours and battles in an entertaining, and sometimes dramatically tragic, way.
