Why You Shouldn’t Miss This
The Santa Maria del Fiore is a Gothic-style church and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was designed by the Italian architect Arnolfo di Cambio at the end of the 13th century, while the dome was built by the renowned engineer and architect Filippo Bruneschelli. The dome was octagonal, and could not have any external buttress to prevent it from collapsing inside. It had to be made of brick since it was lighter than stone and would be easier to morph the required shape.
The genius of Bruneschelli was the key to the construction of the dome, and he constructed a brick and wood model to demonstrate the plausibility of his proposal. By using catenary arches, he was able to bypass the problem and provide the necessary support. The biggest brick dome in the world was then built on top of the cathedral. Bruneschelli’s brilliance and talent was the force behind the construction of this architectural marvel. Witnessing it in person is a breathtaking experience, and is something that must not be missed by anyone visiting Florence.
The interior of the Dome is also a lavish work of art, and the representation of The Last Judgment is seen on the inside. It was a massive undertaking and nearly 40,000 square feet of surface needed to be painted. Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari took almost 11 years to complete the masterpiece, and it is considered their most exceptional work of art.
The interiors of the Cathedral are relatively bare, especially compared to the other great churches of Italy. You can see a large number of stained glass windows, depicting saints from the New and Old Testament. As you gaze upwards, you can see the incredible golden mosaic of the inside of the dome. Several intricate pairings can be seen in the glittering mosaic. To reach the cupola, you will have to climb 463 steps. As you ascend the staircase, you will catch a sight of The Last Judgment, a set of stunning frescoes painted by the prominent artists Giorgio Vasari and Federico Zuccari.
Nearly 100 meters from ground level, the cupola grants you magnificent views of the Piazza del Duomo. The beauty of this historic city, with a backdrop of rolling hills and greenery, will guarantee one of the best experiences of your life.
