The story is set in Edinburgh around the time of rampant drug abuse and the proliferation of AIDS in the city. The story portrays their misadventures as they stumble through one bad idea to the next, such as Renton sleeping with an underage girl, or getting arrested for shoplifting. The story eventually culminates in a high-stakes drug deal, but will everything go as planned?
