An Ideal Husband
The real-life father and son duo, Edward and Freddie Fox, play fictional father and son in Oscar Wilde’s legendary play, An Ideal Husband. A story of corruption and blackmail supplemented by uncanny wit and humour, the play leads its audience on an interesting and grotesque romantic journey. Every scene is sure to make you question some of the stereotypical ideas we hold about morality.
Why Watch An Ideal Husband
The play has entertained readers and audiences for over a century with its depiction of the twisted manner in which women of the late 19th century tried to snare the ‘perfect husband’. It exposes some of the most blatant hypocrisies of the time. You will be shocked by the relevance it bears even to this day and age. Directed by Jonathan Church, An Ideal Husband opens in Vaudeville Theatre April this year.
An Ideal Husband is set in one of the more prosperous parts of 19th century London. Mrs Laura Cheveley is an influential woman with connections in high places. She is intent on getting a large investment to build a canal in Argentina, and a minister named Robert Chiltern seems to be the perfect stepping stone on her road to stardom. Mrs Cheverly knows Sir Chiltern’s darkest secret and strongly believes that she can use it as leverage to get what she wants. Will Sir Chiltern be able to turn the tables on the ambitious Mrs Cheverly? Will he fall from grace as his secrets are ruthlessly revealed? The story is full of interesting twists and turns that are splattered with humour. It is everything you would expect from a tale told by Oscar Wilde himself.
