Why Watch [Porto]
Described as ‘Laugh-out-loud hilarious’ by the New York Magazine and ‘Magical, mischievous and just plain hilarious’, by Theatermania, [Porto] is promising to shape into a Broadway production soon. The show returns to the stage after a hugely successful run last year at The Bushwick Starr. The story follows the tropes of an upside-down romantic comedy, and explore the journey of a woman, her indulgences in food, sex and modernity.
Porto, is a regular at a bar in a gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood. Porto is a real food, with a vivid imagination and some healthy skepticism about the intersection of feminism and romance. However, surrounded by friends and artisanal snacks, her doubts about being a modern woman are put on hold. That is till a handsome stranger walks in and orders something special. What follows, is disruption and turmoil. An upside-down romantic comedy unfolds both inside and outside Porto’s head as desires of all kinds are awakened.
Comedy Lovers | Couples | Date Night
“A smart, surprising ode to the modern woman’s anxious, circuitous quest for simultaneous self-actualization, pleasure, and perhaps even love—an examination of the conditioning we receive, the ways in which we wake up to it (or don’t), and what we decide to do about it.”
“Swith humor and honesty, [PORTO] dramatizes the late capitalist paradox of having a million avenues for pleasure, but still feeling a gnawing dissatisfaction. "You could have done so much more with all this bounty," [ ] says in a voice as rich as a Médoc, but with an aftertaste of poison. It's enough to make you think twice before stepping into yet another boushy bistro.”
