Why Watch Children of a Lesser God
Making its Broadway revival in April of 2018 is the hit 1980 Tony Award winner for the Best Play - Children of a Lesser God. Revolving around the conflicted relationship between a teacher and his former deaf student, Children of a Lesser God is a heart-touching drama that shines light on the world of the hearing-impaired and the issues they face. While the play was originally written specifically for deaf actress Phyllis French and based on her relationship with her husband Robert Steinberg, the revival will be directed by Tony winner Kenny Leon and will star Joshua Jackson and Laurence Ridloff.
Children of a Lesser God tells the story of Sarah, a deaf janitor at her former school for the deaf and hard of hearing. A new teacher, James Leeds, arrives at the school and immediately takes a keen interest in her, all the while encouraging her to communicate orally through lip reading. As they begin an intimate relationship, there is an underlying struggle for control. By exploring what it means to communicate, they pave the path for love beyond just words.
