Why Watch The Red Letter Plays: Fucking A

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks’ modern-day remix of ‘The Scarlet Letter’. The ‘Scarlet Letter’ was a fictional novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1850 and has been hailed as a 'breakthrough in literature' by critics. The current play has been described as “A fiery, raw-throated shout in the face of hypocrisy, privilege, and injustice.” by the New York Magazine.

The play features Tony nominees Brandon Victor Dixon and Marc Kudisch along with Emmy winner Christine Lahti and is directed by Obie winner Jo Bonney. Focusing on themes of shaming and social stigmatization, this crafty play sheds light on human action and reaction and allows the audience to look at events in different perspectives.

This play is produced in tandem with In The Blood, allowing you the unique opportunity to see two plays by one writer in dialogue with each other.

The Story

Set in the late 17th century in the Puritan town of Boston, ‘Fucking A’ is the story of an adulteress Hester Prynne, who has recently given birth to Pearl, a baby of unknown parentage, after which she is forced to wear the letter ‘A’ on her clothes. In spite of the local townsfolk and leaders repeatedly asking her to name the father of the child, she constantly refuses to divulge the information due to which she is imprisoned.

After being released from prison, Pearl and Hester live a hard life at the edge of town. Hester hears rumors that she may lose Pearl and seeks the ministers and governor to persuade them to allow Pearl to say with her. What follows is a tale of shame, revenge, and torment as Hester’s husband goes on a crusade to uncover the father of Pearl and exact his toll on the man.

Critics Reviews

"The cast brings humanizing shades of pain, greed, and longing to symbolic figures, without ever tearing the play’s somber folk-tale fabric. And the songs – which owe a heavy debt to Brecht’s immortal collaborator, Kurt Weill – strike a resonant balance between poetry and proclamation."

Ben Brantley, New York Time

"Fucking A is a rare play in our contemporary landscape. It reaches across genres and performance styles — musical, Jacobean revenge play, Brechtian epic theater — drawing on the gifts of a multitalented ensemble to touch something frighteningly prescient about a world twisted by inequity and disenfranchisement, a world in which resentment and hatred can bloom into cancer."

Sara Holden, New York Magazine/Vulture
