Why Watch Charm?

Charm. A word that has lost meaning as time has progressed. What is charm and how does one become charming? Well, charm is recognizing human kindness and promoting healthy relationships. While addressing such heavy themes, this play is not overshadowed by a grim outlook but rather takes a charming (pardon the pun) approach.

The overarching themes of the play propose a message of kindness and humility. Combined with the fantastic direction by Will Davies, ‘Charm’ provides audiences with a unique look into the LGBTQ community from real-life inspired events and struggles. A complex story which received positive feedback from audiences and critics, ‘Charm’ has been deemed a must-watch in the Off-Broadway world after its recent previews.

The Story

Mama Darleena Andrews, a 67-year-old, black, transgender woman is the teacher in charge of etiquette class at a Chicago LGBTQ community center. Having lived in a time before the term LGBTQ was in fashion, the sexagenarian teacher faces a big challenge while trying to educate the rowdy new generation of youths in her class. The challenge, increased visibility hasn’t made life easier for her poor black and Latino students. While teaching her classes, Darleena is constantly in a state-of-conflict with the lessons of Emily Post, a prominent writer whose works centered around etiquette, especially when it comes to gender behavior. Through the story, Darleena slowly becomes a role model for her students and asks ‘how do we lift each other up when the world wants to tear us apart?

Critics Reviews

“‘Charm,’ as this world premiere is called, is not only charming but has the potential to be a real hit.”
– Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune

“For all its soft satire and good-natured laughs, ‘Charm’ has some sharp points to make to the fractious trans community...Dawkins treats his characters with respect – just the way that Mama Darleena wants her students to comport themselves."
– Marilyn Stasio, Variety
