Winner of three Tony awards, including Best Play, three Drama Desk awards, and three Outer Critics Circle awards, the 2017 revival of M. Butterfly is just as provocative as it was 30 years ago. Don’t miss your chance to watch this “urgently relevant” story come to life on stage.
Why Watch M. Butterfly
A stunning, visual spectacle, M. Butterfly narrates a spine-chilling tale of romance and betrayal. Considered a broadway revival masterpiece, the production is bound to leave you gripping the arm of your chair. With visionary director Julie Taymor, Tony award winner David Henry Hwang, and Academy Award nominee Clive Owen, the play takes you on a breathtaking journey with its spectacular sets and impressive stagecraft. The revived production also brings forth revolutionary music by Academy award winner Elliot Goldenthal. A magical blend of the ancient martial-arts and contemporary choreography, the score alone is brilliant.
An intimate love story based on true incidents, M. Butterfly is an epic tale of political intrigue. The story revolves around an illicit love affair between a French diplomat and a Chinese opera diva. Just when you start to think the play is another typical romantic account, dark secrets that lie beneath the surface come afloat. What happens when the intoxicating and electrifying secrets come to life? The plot-twists of this real life scandal come with remarkable bends that will keep you at the edge of your seat throughout the play.

“By virtue of its subject matter alone, M. Butterfly remains a provocative drama, not to mention an important milestone for an Asian-American playwright on Broadway.”
– The Hollywood Reporter
“Nearly 30 years on, it’s still clever, tender and formally daring. The original version, which edged closer to epic theatre, dealt heavily in metaphor and symbolism. This new version does too, but it’s more grounded in fact, which leaves one hungry for particulars of the real story, particularly Song’s own desires, which are hinted at, but never fully articulated.”

Was looking for a Broadway experience during my trip to New York, and safe to say I wasn't disappointed. Booking my tickets via Headout was a simply process. In fact, they were hand delivered to me outside the venue by a smiley boy. It was nice to be greeted that way. Keep up the good work guys!
Personally, i'm not very thrilled about Broadway shows... needless to say about political dramas! But M. Butterfly took my breath away and kept my eyes glued to the stage the whole time. The choreography and the background score moved me and I had tears in my eyes by the end of it. Well done, the entire crew! Bravo!
Clive Owen creates nothing but magic on stage. The story is nothing like the original version, but you will grow to love it as the show progresses. It does compel you to stop and think about your life at some point. If you mind nude scenes, this is not the play for you.
