Directed by Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan, 1984 captures the surreal and unnerving dystopian world of George Orwell’s novel. With effective stage design and stirring performances, this play offers audience members a punch in the gut. Brazen, unrestrained and brilliant, 1984 will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions.
Why Watch 1984
1984 premiered on Broadway in June 2017, and will be showing for a limited run until October 8th, 2017. The gritty theatrical production of the novel has unnerved audiences and critics, as the premise of the story feels too close to home even today, just as it did in 1949. The bold and immersive play has provocative stage antics and gut wrenching performances that are said to leave audience members squirming and evaluating the world they live in. Disturbing yet thought provoking - the Huffington Post is calling 1984 “an unforgettable jolt of high-voltage theatre that is literally shocking.”
Broadway’s production of 1984 is based on the dystopian novel by George Orwell. The story is a fictional account of the future, where a totalitarian government is ruling the country through an array of unsavory political manipulations and falsifications. The protagonist, Winston Smith, works for the Ministry of Truth, an organization responsible for party propaganda and the revision of historical facts. As he wrestles with the oppression, Winston dares to express his thoughts in a diary and pursues a relationship with Julia. Caught in the eye of the administration, will Winston continue to fight back or will he be forced to conform?
