Insula of the Ara Coeli Underground Walking Tour - Express Entry
Know Your Tour
Skip the queues and enter the majestic world of Imperial Rome as you take a tour of the Insula of the Ara Coeli!
The Roman Insula, so called because of its peculiar architecture that reflects the urban planning of ancient Rome, is a building with nearly five floors to itself. Brought to light during the Roman isolation in 1926, the building was originally found at the foot of the Constantine Hill. Estimated to have been built sometime around the 2nd century, A.D., the insula has a back wall that seamlessly fits into the steep cliffs of Arce Constantina itself.
You will discover, as your guide explains to you, the transition to the period of rented apartments with the presence of balconies on shelves of travertine. Legend has it that at one point, the building could house nearly 400 tenants, and is marked with black and white mosaic floors, standing testament to the genius of Roman architecture all those centuries ago.
A tour that is a sheer delight to your senses, nothing less and nothing more, it will stun you with its simplicity and is not one to be missed.
