Henry Krieger, the winner of three Academy Awards and a Grammy, teamed up with the prolific Tom Eyen to produce a memorable masterpiece. Dreamgirls is a flawless confluence of incredible writing, acting, and music composition. The musical beautifully depicts the ‘Rhythm and Blues’ culture of the 1960’s, and its gradual evolution into the ‘Pop’ genre. This is a spectacle that music lovers simply cannot afford to miss.
Why Watch Dreamgirls
Dreamgirls opened on Broadway nearly 35 years ago. It was nominated for an impressive thirteen Tony Awards and ended up winning six. The show was so successful and enchanting, that in 2006, this romantic musical drama was also adapted into a film starring Jamie Foxx and Beyoncé. In February 2016, it was confirmed that Dreamgirls would premiere in the West End’s Savoy Theatre with Amber Riley in the lead as Effie White. Dreamgirls has made a habit of entertaining its audience with impeccable quality and dynamism that has not dulled over the years. For anyone eager to listen to a truly magical list of songs entwined in a well-told and complex story, Dreamgirls will be nothing short of heaven on earth. All the way from ‘Move’ to ‘One Night Only’, the songs throughout the play serve as reflections for the characters’ predicaments.
The story is set in 1962, and kicks off with a young group of musicians from Chicago deciding to enter a famous talent competition at the Apollo Theatre in New York. Calling themselves ‘The Dreamettes’, the group consists of lead singer, Effie White, and her best friends Deena Jones and Lorrell Robinson. They lose the talent show, but their fortunes flip when they meet their new manager, Curtis Taylor Jr. James Early, a fan-favourite R&B star, hires the Dreamettes as backup singers after Curtis convinces him that Effie and her band have something special about them. After a few performances and internal issues with James Early, the girl-group is disbanded. Watch the members of the band overcome a myriad of hurdles on their road to reconciliation and stardom.
