Replete with returning contributions by the brilliant artistic minds behind the original film, Mira Nair’s Monsoon Wedding is a fascinating exploration of love and the concept of marriage in a rapidly globalizing India!

Why You Should Watch Monsoon Wedding

Set in the bustling city of Delhi, Monsoon Wedding follows the story of a young woman named Aditi, the only daughter of an upper-middle-class Indian family. Preparations for a pompous 4-day long celebration is in full swing as Aditi’s wedding date is approaching. She has been promised to a wealthy Indian-American groom named Hemant, who resides in New Jersey. Although everything seems to be working out well at first, we soon find out that their marriage is riddled with problems. Aditi has been having an affair with another man, her father is struck by a host of financial problems, and an entire web of unsettling secrets begin to unravel as various members of the Verma family congregate in Delhi.

This musical adaptation revisits the charming 2001 film that is still considered one of Mira Nair’s finest works. This dramatic tale explores a wide range of themes ranging from India’s rich cultural diversity to the widening gap between the poor and the wealthy. Nair has won several accolades including the UNESCO Award, the Padma Bhushan (Govt. of India), and the Independent Spirit Award. The show also features music by the National Film Award winner Vishal Bhardwaj.
