Why Watch Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike
Why Watch Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike
Vanya and Sonia are middle-aged siblings who live in Pennsylvania. After spending their adulthood looking after their now-deceased parents, Vanya and Sonia do not have jobs and are being supported by the sister Masha, a successful actress. They spend their days bemoaning lost chances, until one day Masha returns home. She brings her much younger lover, the gorgeous but simple Spike along with her, which disrupts the boring lives of the two sisters. Will the three sisters get along and finally be optimistic about their futures?
Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike originally premiered in New Jersey in 2012 and went on to be transferred to Broadway the following year. It was very successful at Broadway, being nominated for 6 Tony Awards and went on to win the Tony Award for Best Play and a Drama Desk Award. Renowned actress and Olivier Award-winner Janie Dee takes on the lead role, and she was critically acclaimed for her portrayal of the preening and narcissistic Masha. Director Walter Bobbie, a Tony Award winner himself does a splendid job in combining the comic satire with a cloak of self-pity.
