Phoenix Dance Theatre — Black Waters

Witness a breathtaking display of dance that brings some of the lesser-known dark secrets of British colonial rule to the forefront. With choreographers Mitul Sengupta and Shambik Ghose collaborating with the Phoenix Dance Theatre, a spectacular performance awaits you!

Why Watch Phoenix Dance Theatre — Black Waters

Black Waters focuses on two shameful episodes of the British colonial rule. The first incident is that of the 1781 massacre aboard the Zong slave ship. Nearly 130 slaves were thrown overboard the ship in order to claim the insurance on their lives. The second incident is during the colonial rule of India during the 20th century. The dance highlights the events that took place at the notorious Kala Pani (which translates to Black Water) prison in the Andaman Islands, where freedom activists were tortured brutally.

As the longest-standing dance company that is based outside of London, Phoenix Dance Theatre has been performing for nearly 40 years. Their innovative approach to contemporary dance and artistic excellence has won them high praise from across the world. Artistic Director Sharon Watson is a multiple award-winning choreographer who is committed to improving diversity in the world of theater. Dr. Mitul Sengupta is a proponent of Kathak, a traditional dance form from India. Shambik Ghose has performed across the world in numerous international dance festivals and ballets and currently pursues research in artistic deliverance through the use of strategic methods. The confluence of several dance backgrounds of the choreographers allows for storytelling from different perspectives and makes for a memorable show!
