The Tin Drum
Delight in Oliver Reese’s exquisite take on Nobel laureate Gunter Grass’ immensely popular novel that is widely regarded as the 20th century’s defining literary piece!
Why You Should Watch The Tin Drum
The play follows the tale of Oskar Matzerath and the peculiar life that he chose to live. Born in 1924 in Danzig, he has the maturity of an adult but vows to never grow beyond the age of 3, physically or mentally, when his father proclaims that Oskar will eventually become a grocer. The only possession he values is a tin drum that was gifted to him on his third birthday by his mother. Oskar lives through several of Europe’s most tumultuous years, from the crippling poverty of Germany in the 1930s to the horrors of World War II and beyond, refusing, all the while, to part with his beloved tin drum.
In his original novel, Gunter Grass attempted to capture the confusion and sheer destruction caused by totalitarian regimes in the 20th century. Renowned German director and author Oliver Reese encapsulates every aspect of the original masterpiece in a deeply moving theatrical presentation. The volatile character of Oskar Matzerath is played by Nico Holonics of Final Fantasy XV (2016) fame.
