Join a runaway teenager and his peculiar company of travellers in this fabulous feel-good Aboriginal musical that won the heart of every Australian when it was first released in 1990!

Why You Should Watch Bran Nue Dae

Bran Nue Dae is set in 1960s Western Australia. In an attempt to impress the girl he left behind, a young boy named Willie decides to run away from his mission school and head to Broome. He is closely pursued by a German priest. On the road to Broome, Willie also meets two hippies and a rather strange and cagey old uncle who join him on his journey. In this moving and lively coming-of-age tale, every character discovers something fascinating about themselves.

Jimmy Chi’s incredible semi-autobiographical musical fuses a wide range of genres including rock-and-roll, country, blues, jazz, and gospel. Mark Thompson’s inspired set and costume design is reminiscent of the legendary Sun Pictures open-air cinema in Broome. For this production, musical directors Michael Mavromatis and Stephen Pigram will be working alongside acclaimed director Andrew Ross and choreographer Tara Gower. With its impressive cast and creative team, Bran Nue Dae attempts to answer the question - “What does it truly mean to come home?”
