Feast your ears on this adapted masterpiece of the renowned Italian opera composer, Giuseppe Verdi. The contemporary production, directed by Barbora Horáková Joly, follows the tragic romance of Luisa and Rodolfo, amidst political strife and oppressive families.
Why Watch Luisa Miller
Retaining all of Verdi’s beautifully fashioned lyrical lines and sensitive orchestration, Barbora Horáková Joly provides a modern-day setting to the classical opera. With themes of love, loss, greed, and sacrifice running through the production, Joly uses stark, white space to explore these tragic themes within the opera.
Giuseppe Verdi, one of the most influential opera composers in the 19th century, was also very involved in the political and social movements at that time, which often influenced his works. Luisa Miller was adapted, by Verdi, from Friedrich von Schiller’s play Kabale und Liebe (Intrigue and Love). While Verdi has initially decided for Luisa Miller to be a patriotic piece, the librettist Salvadore Cammarano who convinced him to remove most of the political element, to avoid censorship, and focus on the romantic elements in this bourgeoisie tragedy.
In spite of the divide in their classes, lovers Luisa and Rodolfo proclaim everlasting fidelity to one another, unaware of the forces that do not assent to their union. Plagued by the corrupt intentions of Rodolfo’s father and others, their dreams of being together, shatters in a tragic ending.
