This multi-platform project brings together stories from across the world, that started with a kiss. At times passionate, sorrowful and even humourous, this performance explores the healing nature of a simple gesture. Kissing Rebellion is inspired by the social media message that followed the Paris attacks in 2015: “Il va falloir beaucoup, beaucoup, beaucoup d’amour”- “It’s going to take a lot, a lot, a lot of love.”

Why Watch Kissing Rebellion

How does one get over a heartbreak? What does it take to begin healing in the middle of a tragedy? Co-creators Carolyn Defrin and Abigail Boucher look deeper into how a kiss can be a powerful act of care, trust, and love. Having collected stories from conversations with friends, family, and acquaintance, the duo has put together a moving, multi-media performance that makes the audience realize that “The simplest gesture can be the greatest act of care”. Carolyn Defrin and Abigail Boucher first worked together in 2011 on a production of The Sparrow with The House Theatre. Since then they have collaborated on projects led by Defrin in London and Chicago (The Balloon, 2012; Missing, 2016) experimenting with design and storytelling. Kissing Rebellion marks their first co-created project, inspired by Defrin’s desire to explore different kissing cultures

The Story

At dinner parties, hosted at their respective homes in London, Paris, Chicago and Los Angeles, Carolyn Defrin and Abigail Boucher began recording stories, that their guests shared, that began with a kiss. Kissing Rebellion is a multiplatform project comprising an original dance theatre piece, an audiovisual installation that consists of these recordings and a developing online library of kissing stories where people across the globe will be able to share stories of care and healing.
