My Name Is Lucy Barton Tickets

Featuring multi-award winner Laura Linney, this soul-stirring solo weaves a profoundly affecting tale on the nuances of human relations and coming to terms with the past.

Why Watch My Name is Lucy Barton

Adapted from the best-selling novel by Pulitzer Prize winner Elizabeth Strout, My Name is Lucy Barton features just a hint of drama and even less theatricality. The play is directed by the profoundly talented Richard Eyre (of Guys and Dolls fame) and his understated staging provides the perfect platform to showcase Linney’s larger-than-life portrayal of Strout’s protagonist, Lucy Barton.

    The Story

Lucy Barton wakes up in the hospital after an operation to find, much to her surprise, her estranged mother at the foot of her bed. Lucy is a successful writer living in NYC, but seeing her mother unearths painful memories from a long-gone childhood.

The plot unfurls into an agonising narrative of poverty and abuse where Lucy faced cultural and emotional deprivation alongside financial hardships. She escapes this dizzying childhood to start afresh in NYC. Yet, loneliness has remained a constant companion, prompting her to seek solace in books and writing.

The moving story walks us through the emotional reunion of the two women (both played brilliantly by Linney) and the deep-seated guilt they harbor deep within their heart; in the mother’s case over Lucy’s penniless childhood, and Lucy’s, her mother’s abandonment.
