Why Watch Macbeth
An opera based on the renowned William Shakespeare play of the same, Macbeth premiered for the first time in 1847. It propelled Guiseppe Verdi to universal fame and inspired him to adapt more plays written by Shakespeare. Macbeth also served as a critical step in Verdi’s path to integrating musical dramas in his later years.
Macbeth features some of the most famous opera singers of this generation, including Anna Netrebko, Ildar Abdrazakov, Matthew Polenzani, Placido Domingo, and Zeljko Lucic. Anna Netrebko’s performance in 2014 as Lady Macbeth won her critical acclaim and she is all set to reprise her role at the MET opera. Although considered to be a daunting challenge, the Russian prima donna is completely equipped to tackle the role. Her performance in the famous sleepwalking scene in Act IV, in particular, is exceptional and is a study of guilt unlike any other. Baritone Zeljko Lucic shares the lead role alongside Domingo, Lucic is well-known for his performances of Guiseppe Verdi’s operas, having performed in a total of 23 leading roles. Adrian Noble’s production is set in 20th century Scotland, and it is every bit gripping as the original. Mark Thompson's set design is minimal and adds to the sense of uneasiness and fear that is prevalent throughout the show. Finally, he threat of political tyranny has been captured spectacularly by Noble’s taut staging, making for an experience that cannot be missed!
It is post-World-War-2 in Scotland, and gun-carrying militias can be seen throughout the country. Macbeth and Banquo are the leaders of the Scottish Army, and they meet a group of witches who make a prophecy. Macbeth is addressed as the King of Scotland, while Banquo is prophecised to the father of kings.
Lady Macbeth learns from her husband about the events have transpired, and she decides that she must follow her ambition. She tells her husband that they must kill the current king, Duncan. Macbeth returns to his castle after committing the murder, and the king’s body is discovered by Macduff. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth feign surprise and condemn the murder. Macbeth goes on to become king after Duncan’s son, Malcolm becomes the prime suspect for the murder.
Macbeth and his wife plot to kill both children of Duncan with the hope of securing the throne. Will the couple be successful in this appalling plan that will guarantee unbridled power? Or are they doomed to be haunted by the atrocities they have committed? Are there any more prophecies that Macbeth can glean from the witches to learn about his ultimate fate?
