21st Century Choreographers II

Revel in a gracefully choreographed program that showcases the sixth ballet created for the NYCB by Russian choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, which first premiered last winter, and returns to the stage in the spring of 2020. It is coupled with Everywhere We Go, a ballet choreographed by Justin Peck, presenting an energetic dance with 25 dancers, set to the score of Sufjan Stevens.

Why You Should Watch 21st Century Choreographers II

The performance makes substantial use of Sufjan Steven’s inimitable score. He is a multi-instrumentalist and an American singer-songwriter. He was critically acclaimed for Illinois, his 2005 album release. The song Chicago from the album reached the number one stop on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. Stevens was nominated for an Academy Award for the Best Original Song category. He was also nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media. Sufjan Stevens has released numerous albums, which feature a number of different styles. All the way from electronic music such as Enjoy Your Rabbit and the lo-fi folk music of Seven Swans to full-fledged orchestras of Illinois, he has done it all. Stevens uses a wide range of instruments and plays several of them personally in each of his recordings.

Justin Peck is the artistic advisor to the New York City Ballet and is also the resident choreographer. Everywhere We Go is the sixth ballet by Justin Peck, for the Company. After a successful collaboration with Sufjan Stevens for Year of the Rabbit, this is the second time that Peck and Stevens worked together. Peck was heavily influenced by Sufjan’s music and choreographed the ballet to be utterly in sync with it at all times. The production features costumes designed by the principal dancer for the New York City Ballet, Janie Taylor. The sets for the show are created by Karl Jenson, an artist from Brooklyn. The lighting is handled by Brandon Stirling Baker, who often collaborates with Justin Peck. Everywhere We Go was first performed in 2014 at the NYCB Spring Gala.

The Show

New Ratmansky

This is the latest work from Alexi Ratmansky, the resident American Ballet Theatre Artist. Much of the ballet is populated with melodies that flow effortlessly with the backing harmonic accompaniment. The staccato and legato portions are beautifully orchestrated, punctuated strongly by fluidic dance sequences that mirror the contrasting styles.

Everywhere We Go

Everywhere We Go is a monumental ballet show choreographed by Justin Peck. It features an ensemble of 25 dancers. It explores a breathtaking cinematic score by Sufjan Stevens through nine distinct sections. This is the first-ever NYCB commission for the indie-pop icon. Every part of the performance is highlighted by a constantly changing, multi-layered backgrounds.
