Classic NYCB I

4.7

Behold some of the most fantastic performances as the Company presents Episodes and Haieff Divertimento by the legendary Balanchine. Witness Concertino, an electrifying ballet that is set to Stravinsky, and Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes by Justin Peck.

Why You Should Watch Classic NYCB I

Haieff Divertimento is a blues pas de deux and masterfully blends neoclassical ballet with modern concert dance and famous American dance expressions. The last time it was performed was nearly two decades ago, so this refreshing take on the ballet created in 1947 is a treat to the eyes.

Choreographed by Jerome Robbins, Four Chamber Works is a celebration of the Stravinsky Centennial in 1982. He takes quintet of chamber works, which are unrelated to each other, and beautifully fuses them into a four-part ballet. Concertino is the third part of this entire creation and is performed as a stand-alone piece.

Since 1961, the New York City Ballet has been performing each section of Episodes individually and has excluded Taylor’s solo. The company presents this ballet show in honour of Paul Taylor, the American choreographer, who passed away in 2018, and includes his solo which has not been seen since 1989.

Justine Peck’s ballet, Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes premiered in February of 2015 and showcased a score that Peck had divided into four unique choreographic renditions. The first piece is an energetic piece that Peck calls ‘engine-like’, while the second movement is choreographed to evoke cyclic weather patterns. The third movement represents a duo of birds in flight, and the final movement showcases a vigorous and scintillating choreography that communicates a feeling of life and competition.

The Show

Haieff Divertimento is set to a composition by Alexei Haieff that is as evocative as it is effervescent. A recherché ballet, it is a treat to watch in the style of Balanchine. The performance features a leading couple and a quartet of supporting couples, who are dressed in unelaborate but elegant costumes.

This diverse ballet program also features the pas de trois titled Concertino by Jerome Robbins. Igor Stravinsky's mesmerising and suspenseful score for Concertino is perfect for the ballet. The elaborate and jazzy piece raises into intense crescendos and crashes into a sudden deafening silence, building and releasing tension all along. It is accompanied by three dancers who have excellent chemistry together.

A groundbreaking piece by Balanchine, Episodes is a four-part ballet that was birthed out of his love for orchestral music by Anton von Webern. As a tribute to the legendary composer, Balanchine created this wonderful ballet and set it to Ricercata, the final section of Webern's orchestration of a composition by Bach.

This piece is followed by an abstract take on Rodeo by Agnes de Mille. Rodeo: Four Dance Episodes is choreographed by Justin Peck. It features a single woman, the principal dancer, who is paired with a cast of 15 playful yet impassioned male dancers, making for a refreshing and adventurous show that is guaranteed to be an audience favourite.
