Why Watch All Balanchine

George Balanchine was one of the foremost choreographers of ballet in the 20th century. He immigrated to the United States at a time when no one performed or watched ballet. He went on to co-found the New York City Ballet and was its Artistic Director for more than 35 years. Balanchine was trained at the Imperial Ballet School in Russia, and he fused the classical Russian style with those of Broadway and Hollywood and created the dazzling “neoclassical style” of ballet.

Balanchine was also renowned for wonderfully combining dance and music into a single cohesive piece. He worked with numerous composers of the 20th century, including renowned figures such as Igor Stravinsky, and 19th-century stalwarts such as Tchaikovsky and Leo Delibes. He propagated the Balanchine Method, a training technique that continues to be taught at the School of American Ballet, which encouraged rapid movements along with more open use of the body. Do not miss an eye-catching performance by the NYC Ballet!

The Show

The show consists of 3 different ballets by George Balanchine, which explore the range of styles and influences of the legendary choreographer.

The first ballet, titled Allegro Brilliante, is a piece of pure joy and dance. Set to Tchaikovsky’s riveting Piano Concerto No. 3, the movements are a masterpiece of classical vocabulary and most of the choreography occurs within a fairly restricted amount of time and space. Although it originally served as a hastily choreographed filler, Allegro Brilliante has gone on to become one of the most revered works by Balanchine and has been praised for its speed and energy.

The second piece, La Source, is set to the classical French score by Leo Delibes, which he used for two of his ballets, Sylvia and Naila. The ballet has 11 dancers and a duration of 27 minutes, during which you will witness the technical acumen of the NYC Ballet. The choreography looks exactly like a ballet would have in 19th century France, with precise and delicate footwork.

The third and final ballet was a joint effort by Balanchine and Stravinsky. Often considered a masterpiece of musical narration, the score is mysterious, yet compelling. Several elements of Russian folklore are incorporated in the story, making for a gripping tale. The final departure is spectacular, true to Balanchine style and will leave you wanting for more.
